THE WARDROBE TO RIO 2016
THE RUNNERS AND RIDERS THAT MADE OUR SUITCASE TO THE RIO OLYMPICS
Written by Peter Brooker in Get the Look on the 19th August 2016
For this trip to Rio, even though it's winter out there I knew it would be humid, I knew I'd be covering some ground walking at least 10k a day. With all that in mind I procured a few items especially. Here in a nutshell are the sartorial runners and riders that made my suitcase to Rio.
DJINNS
Although this was a holiday, I was still looking to cram in a run every other day. On top of that I knew I needed something comfy for all the hiking we'd be doing around the Olympic Park and up and down Copacabana strip. I took a pair of red Moc Lau Fusion-M's by DJINNS with me. They are a German based brand established in 2001. With the eye on details, the brand follows the idea of individual but matching items in colour and fabric as one of its signature features. I liked the loud red, it certainly suited the vibrancy and gaiety of the city of Rio. On top of that I helped myself to a handkerchief, a multi-purpose light cloth always comes in handy for post workout or emergency spillages.
TAG 1
Comfy trainers sorted, now time for some trendy boat shoes for the treks up and down the Copacabana and Ipanema beach. Tag 1 was a lateral move, a brand that focuses on underfoot cushioning by producing handmade top quality footwear. I plumped for the navy Riviera - an inspired low-top boat shoe that encompasses the moccasin rubber pebble outsole. With a suede finish, it demurely adorned my feet, offering a great contrast to my lighter coloured shorts and t-shirts. The tread has endured many miles and my waffle stompers remained cool throughout.
TRNDSXL
I really wanted to take a bit of London with me, after stumbling on TRNDSXL at the recent Pure London exhibition it was like the planets had aligned. The light silk would feel non-wearing and be ideal to combat the everyday humidity, the floral patterns would marry the tropical backdrop of the city and the unisex design meant the missus also got to enjoy the shirt poolside. The garments feature adjustable waistbands and oversized shirts. The brand also support innovation, equality and ethical fashion; with all their products being manufactured in North London.
GYMPHLEX
I was going to attend numerous Olympic events, so I wanted to present an athleisure side of my wardrobe. Gymphlex has a rich heritage that spans back all the way to early 20th century, and with the Olympics itself being steeped in tradition I thought this would be a perfect fit. The cap, tee, and wristband made me feel like I belonged in the players’ box cheering on Flipkens as she dismantled Venus Williams in the first round of the women's tennis. But equally, I felt just at home rocking the casual look up Sugarloaf Mountain. Stay tuned for a new website and added extra's to the Gymphlex site next month.
FILMORE
This trip involved a lot of traveling, from London to Barcelona, to Sao Paulo, to Rio. Then the return from Rio, to Sao Paulo, to Hamburg to London. I wanted something on the go for airport travel and the Filmore Skincare range certainly filled the gap. In keeping with the local agriculture that provided an inexhaustible supply of coconuts, I thought it rather smug of me to opt for the body wash and moisturiser composed from coconut essence for its natural antibacterial qualities. I smelt great going through customs and fresh for my jet-lagged arrival.
DAIMON BARBER
Now for the hay-maker - the Daimon Barber grooming kit. We would be eating out every night, touring all the restaurants in the plush areas of Leblon. So I wanted my boat race to look presentable, to be a gentrified ambassador for the UK. I took the entire immaculately presented box of Daimon Barber goodies with me, wanting to reap the benefits of using all the products as a system. Although I'm also confident the products would work well independently of each other, I wanted to utilise the high quality actives and oils together. The Anti-Fatigue face and eye cream certainly masked the jet lag (and the occasional refractory periods between responsible-ish drinking sessions). The Honeybee Complex and Propolis Face Wash was both used and complimented by the missus (though I soon put a stop to that and bought her some cheap soap from the mall). My approach to shaving is normally phlegmatic, a calorie burner, a necessary evil that I would happily do without if I only I could get past the 5 day itch phase. However, the shaving cream and post shave balms transformed my attitude towards shaving from one of arduous banality to meditative delectation. I felt assured and refreshed to tackle the evenings frivolities.
G.H BASS
And lastly, but by no means an afterthought, G.H Bass. I fancied something dandy-esque to rock up the famous Selaron tiled stairs. My recent love affair with G.H Bass was an instant turn-to - so I invested in these flamboyant Weejuns Cup Larkin Reverso Suede Tassle Loafers. Much like Jorge Selaron (architect of the eponymously named stairwell) G.H Bass are a stickler for detail. The Tassle loafer is an easy slip-on with hand-stitched seams in ecru waxed thread.
