SUMMER FESTIVAL ESSENTIALS FOR THE STYLISH GENT
WHAT GUYS SHOULD BE WEARING DURING THIS YEAR'S FESTIVAL SEASON
Written by Andree Latibeaudiere in Essentials on the 24th April 2015
Coachella might be a distant, albeit fuzzy memory, but the iconic event marks the unofficial start of the festival season on this side of the pond, whether you choose to stay on the mainland or journey further afield. Festival dressing has taken an interesting turn, veering away from the generic t-shirt-and-shorts uniform, and transforming into something that incorporates sartorial elements from formalwear and activewear, to create an evolved look destined to be captured by the savvy street style observers.
But first, in order to carry off the quirky touches and tongue-in-cheek sleights of hand, a solid base is needed and Menswear Style has compiled the ultimate list of essentials to balance any look that will last the entire season.
The Easy Jumper
Nothing is arguably more versatile than a simple jumper, especially in an unpredictable outdoor setting. This doesn't mean choosing the shapeless, pilled garment from the past winter, but opting for a sleek, well-fitted piece to layer over shirts, under jackets or on its own. We love this lightweight grey jumper from Reiss, with subtle textured fabric and contrasting stitching around the collar. Or choose a bolder printed option and, as a side note, the easiest way to wear prints is to stick to a monochrome palette. It doesn't get much better than this marble print jumper from which can be paired with a fine, printed shirt for a fuss free clash.
The Printed Short Sleeve Shirt
The festival look gets more polished with a button-down shirt, yet remains decidedly casual by keeping the sleeves short. Forget the block colours and try a quiet print, such as this shirt from Issey Miyake, layered under a light blazer or bomber jacket.
Cool Shorts
No summer look is complete without a pair of shorts, but instead of choosing a highly tailored pair, embrace the laid-back feel with these soft, drawstring shorts from Dolce & Gabbana. Smarten them up with a structured shirt and loafers or pair with a soft Henley t shirt.
Classic Sunglasses
Wayfarers's ubiquity shows no sign of changing and this updated classic pair will serve you well for years to come. However, if you want to try something (anything) other than RayBans, this sleek pair from Saint Laurent, featuring clear, nude frames will earn you extra style points whilst protecting your eyes.
The Utilitarian Rucksack
Even for festivals, you should give as much attention to your carryall, as the rest of your look. Nothing spoils the effect more than shoddy accessories and this classic navy rucksack with tan details from Sandqvist is a preppy choice, but is also sturdy enough to keep up. If canvas isn't your thing, invest in this simple pebble grain leather bag with minimal details from Thom Browne which costs more than the opening act.
