BeardGang Members Top 5 Tips for a Healthy Beard

Maintaining a healthy beard is not an easy task and can at times feel like an uphill battle. It takes more than good products to keep your facial hair in tip top shape. BeardGang Members founder Adam White-Johnson shares five simple steps to improve the health of your beard:

1. Wash your beard regularly

Your beard is exposed to a lot and food spillages, sweat or oil build up can lead to poor hygiene. Make washing your beard a daily priority, although not all beard washes or shampoos are suitable for everyday use. Many contain Sulphates which will strip your beard of its natural oils. Our Hemp Beard wash is Sulphate free and made from naturally derived ingredients. This ensures your natural oils are retained, whilst gently cleansing your beard.

2. Stay hydrated

Men are often torn between using a balm or oil to keep their beard hydrated. Beard balms are generally responsible for conditioning your beard, whereas oils add nutrients and moisture. Some beards tend to be more voluminous than others, which means you may need a thick beard oil which will be absorbed throughout the day. If you have less facial hair you will need an oil with a lighter consistency. In both cases, balms should be used in conjunction with the oils to seal in moisture. Another factor to consider is that if you spend most of your time indoors, then your beard won’t need as much hydration as someone spending a lot of time outside. Fresh air reduces a beard’s moisture content, so you will need to use both an oil and a balm to properly maintain your beard if you’re outdoors for much of the day. Finally, limit your alcohol intake as it can lead to dehydration of the skin and beard.

3. Trim

Use a pair of scissors to trim split ends. This will keep your beard neat and encourage new hair growth. Better still, visit your local barber if you’re not familiar with the dynamics of beard trimming.

4. Use the right products

It would make no difference to follow all of the steps above and then use products that will diminish your beard health. It is vitally important that you ensure the products you are using contain natural ingredients. Just like the food you put into your body, you need to be aware of what exactly you are feeding your beard. Also, beard hair varies in texture, colour and growth rate. Shopping for the right products becomes easier when you figure out your category.

5. Healthy lifestyle, healthy beard

The general appearance of your beard is attributed to your lifestyle. Exercise regularly, maintain a healthy diet and drink plenty of water to keep yourself and your beard in the best possible condition.
