Transportation 

Of course, the first thing you'll need to plan for your Yorkshire road trip is transportation. Yorkshire is a large county, so if you don't already have your own car, you'll likely want to rent one for your trip. We hired a 4x4 in Skipton, which was our first stop on our road trip. Renting a car will give you the freedom to explore at your own pace and make stops along the way. Just be sure to book your rental car in advance to get the best rate. Once your transportation is set, you are ready to explore these top 6 attractions in Yorkshire! 

Skipton 

The first stop on the list is Skipton, which is known as a hidden gem full of medieval buildings. It has Skipton Castle, a medieval castle that has withstood several wars in England including the Civil War. The castle was originally built in the 11th century and has been inhabited by the same family for over 900 years. The castle is open to the public and is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Yorkshire. After a tour of every inch of the Castle, make sure to enjoy some tea in the new tea room or visit the shop for more information. 

Bolton Abbey 

Next on our list is Bolton Abbey. It is a ruined Augustinian monastery in Bolton, North Yorkshire, England. It was founded in 115B by Baron de Gresley as a penance for an illicit affair and rebuilt between 1270 and 1320. This is one of our favourite places in Yorkshire as it is surrounded by acres and acres of green land. The ruins are stunning and the grounds are huge, so there's plenty to explore. The Bolton Abbey has River Wharfe, an eight-mile-long river that stretches through the estate, as well as the historic sixty steps that were used during medieval times to cross it. Today, a bridge has been built for visitors to cross safely. If you are interested in TV and media, you may recognize Bolton Abbey as it has been the background in various scenes in several TV films and programs. 

Brimham Rocks 

Following Bolton Abbey are the Brimham Rocks. It is a must-see when visiting Yorkshire. The natural rock formations are something you won't see anywhere else. We recommend hiking to the top of the rocks for a stunning view of the surrounding area. There are a few different routes you can take to get to the top including more challenging ones, so make sure to map out your route before you go. Once you're at the top, be sure to take some time to enjoy the view and snap some photos. If hiking isn't your thing, you can also try going on some of the walks in the area where you can see meadows, pastures, and if you're lucky, animals. This attraction is also great for families with children as they will have the opportunity to climb some of the rocks. Brimham Rocks is a great way to spend a day in Yorkshire. Fountains Abbey 

After exploring the beautiful Brimham Rocks, we suggest going to Fountains Abbey, which is one of the biggest and most well-preserved ruins in England. The Abbey was founded in 1132 by a group of monks looking for a simpler way of life. Today, the ruins are a popular tourist attraction, and you can explore them at your own pace. There is so much history here, and it's really fascinating to see how well-preserved the ruins are. We recommend taking a guided tour, which is included in the entrance fee. This will help you to understand the history of the Abbey and see all of the important parts. 

Richmond Castle 

As the road trip starts to come to an end, we believe you cannot leave Yorkshire without seeing Richmond Castle. This medieval castle is located in the town of Richmond in North Yorkshire. The castle was built in the 11th century and has been well preserved. It is a great place to explore with its many rooms, towers, and courtyards. There is also a museum on-site that tells the history of the castle. Richmond Castle is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Yorkshire and is definitely worth a visit! 

York Minster 

Last but not least on our list is York Minster, which is the largest Gothic cathedral in Northern Europe. The Minster is one of the most important buildings in York, and it's definitely worth a visit. Its intricately carved stone facade is truly breathtaking. Inside, you can explore the vast nave or climb to the top of the central tower for views over the city. You can explore the inside of the cathedral at your own pace, or you can take a guided tour. Either way, you'll be able to appreciate the incredible architecture and history of this amazing building.
