TO BEARD OR NOT TO BEARD: 7 TIPS FOR THE PERFECT SHAVE
Written by Menswear Style in Grooming on the 22nd April 2022
It can be a difficult choice to decide whether or not you should grow a beard. For some people, having a clean-shaven face can add definition, whilst for others, having a beard can add a sense of maturity to their appearance. Shaving can be quite difficult for those who are trying out a new style. Not only do you have to take care not to cut yourself, but irritation can cause damage to the skin. Here are 7 tips to ensure that you are able to undertake a successful shave.
1. Use new razor blades
If you decide to shave with a razor blade, make sure to replace the blade with every shave. Using a blunt razor can introduce germs into the skin and can make it more difficult to fully shave off the hair. In some cases, it can even irritate the skin because it will pull the hair without it being removed.
2. Consider the direction of your hair
When you look at your beard, pay close attention to the direction that your hair grows in. That way you can get a closer shave and avoid the pain of pulling out the hair from the root.
3. Avoid dry-shaving
The main purpose behind shaving is to exfoliate your skin and rid yourself of hair. That’s why you need to avoid dry-shaving. If you dry-shave, it makes it more likely that you will increase the chance of cutting yourself and causing skin irritation.
4. Close your pores
It’s very likely that you may have a bath or shower before you have your shave. That way your face is clean before you remove any hair. Warm water is notorious for opening the pores of your skin. This may make it easier to shave, but it can heighten the risk of the pores becoming clogged after your shave. Once you have completed your shave, rinse your face with cold water. You can then use an aftershave moisturiser to ensure your skin does not become dry and flaky.
5. Pick a quality shaving cream
Whilst this may seem obvious, try to avoid cheap shaving creams that may irritate the skin. You should think about finding creams that use natural products. If you have sensitive skin, try out smaller circles of the product on your face to see how it reacts.
6. Soothe your skin
Once you have finished your shave, make sure to moisturise and soothe your skin. Shaving can be quite an irritating process; therefore, it is useful to have a soothing cream that can lessen redness and calm blood flow before it inflames your skin.
7. Avoid alcohol-based products
Alcohol can actually dry out your skin and cause irritation. It can even create bumps and ingrown hairs. So, try and avoid them as much as possible.
