6 MUST TRY WHISKIES FOR BURNS NIGHT

Whisky lovers around the world may already be familiar with Burns Night, the Scottish tradition which celebrates the life and works of Scotland’s famous poet Robbie Burns. Hosted every year on the 25th January, it’s a great way to bring friends and family together for some New Year cheer – Scottish Style. Tartan, haggis, poetry, and readings all play a major role in traditional celebrations and a decent dram to toast with is a must. So, if you are planning to join the growing number of people who will be marking the occasion in 2022, head to your local liquor store or buy whisky online. Here are six whiskies which are guaranteed to lift your spirits and add some cheer to the celebrations.
The one for everyone… anCnoc 12 Years Old
Pronounced an-knock, this 12-year-old single malt is a great all-rounder – popular with both whisky newcomers and seasoned enthusiasts. On the nose it’s soft and aromatic whilst its award-winning taste features anCnoc’s signature notes of honey and lemon. Its long smooth warming finish is ideal on a cold winter’s evening (and for warming up the voice for Burns Night readings). Crafted in Knockdhu Distillery in Aberdeenshire, this easy to drink single malt is matured in American oak ex-bourbon and ex-oloroso casks.

The one for Bourbon lovers… Bankhall Sweet Mash
This bourbon style sweet mash has been brought to drinkers by US-born Head Distiller Vince Oleson. Created in the new Bankhall Distillery in Blackpool, its aged in exclusively new, charred American oak casks and filled at a lower ABV to allow more oak character to shine through. Known for their daring distilling, the Bankhall team have used a bourbon-style mash bill of corn, rye, and malt to create a thick and hearty mash that serves as the foundation for the whisky. Then, by Sweet Mashing – the process of starting their batches fresh every time – they are able to achieve its rich yet soft profile and flavours of honeyed cornbread, baked apples and brown sugar.

The one from Speyside… Speyburn 15 Years Old
Speyburn 15 Years Old is a vibrant rich whisky that is matured in a mixture of American oak and Spanish oak casks for a minimum of 15 years. Distilled in one of Scotland’s most picturesque distilleries in the popular Speyside region, this deliciously indulgent dram pairs well with milk chocolate. Flavours of oranges, toffee, vanilla, and leather are all wrapped together with a gentle spice and the long-lasting finish is sweet and creamy.

The one for blend fans… Samuel Gelston’s Blended Irish Whisky
Made from a blend of locally sourced Irish malted barley and grain, this premium whisky is triple distilled for smoothness then matured in the finest quality ex-bourbon oak casks. The combination of triple distillation, plus the finest ingredients and cask aging creates an elegantly smooth yet expressive whiskey, with rich flavours that can be savoured neat, over ice or mixed into a long refreshing serve. A little spicy with a smooth honeyed mouth coating and a little grain and nut, this drinkable dram is a great addition to any Burns Night bash.

The one for the cask connoisseur… 2008 Glen Moray Manzanilla Finish
If you enjoy exploring flavours, then this limited-edition cask strength single malt is one for you! Distilled in Speyside’s Glen Moray Distillery – which is known for experimentation - this whisky began life in ex-bourbon casks before being transferred into four Manzanilla sherry casks for finishing. Only 1240 bottles of this flavourful single malt have been released, so be quick if you want to try it. The whisky opens with sweet ripe pears, green apples and freshly cut grass; perfect for enjoying by the fire right now, but also an ideal companion for the longer, lighter spring nights to come.
Glen Moray
The one for mixing… Crabbie’s Yardhead
A no-age-statement single malt from Crabbie’s, this is a brilliant spirit to try out some whisky cocktails with. John Crabbie was a pioneer in whisky and challenged convention. In the early 1800s, he had the outlandish idea of mixing his whisky and his ginger wine and in so doing, he created the Whisky Mac - one of the first ever whisky cocktails. Why not take a leaf out of his book this Burns and mix Crabbie's Yardhead and Crabbie's Ginger wine in equal proportions (over ice if you wish) in a tumbler. Yardhead features notes of biscuit, vanilla, citrus, sweet apple, caramel, and toffee and also pairs well with cola.
