DRY JANUARY: THE BEST NON-ALCOHOLIC & LOW-ALCOHOL DRINKS
Written by Menswear Style in Food & Drink on the 29th December 2020
After a challenging 2020, which has brought an increased focus on health and wellbeing, this Dry January is set to be bigger than ever, with 10% of British men planning to do a whole dry year in 2021. Of those who successfully completed the one-month alcohol-free challenge last year, 86% saved money, 70% had better sleep, and 66% had more energy. So, whether you’re going completely dry or aiming to reduce your intake, here’s a list of the best non-alcoholic and low alcohol drinks available.
Seedlip
Seedlip is the world’s first distilled non-alcoholic spirit, solving the ever-growing dilemma of ‘what to drink when you’re not drinking'. Blended and bottled in England, Seedlip has created a coveted bespoke maceration, copper pot distillation and filtration process for each individual botanical that takes 6 weeks. Seedlip’s spirits boast zero calories, are sugar-free, sweetener-free and artificial flavour-free, making a Seedlip & Tonic the credible adult alternative to alcohol if not drinking.
Three Spirit
Three Spirit, the botanical alchemy specialist, takes a different approach to non-alcoholic drinks, by celebrating what is added opposed to what is taken away. The core range features three, flavour forward alcohol alternatives; the Livener, the Social Elixir, and the Nightcap. These elixirs have been developed in partnership with plant scientists including Professor Michael Heinrich from UCL School of Pharmacy, world-class bartenders and herbalists in order to create different feelings, something that we can all appreciate in these unprecedented circumstances. Each variation features a complex flavour and a deliciously unctuous mouthfeel.
CleanCo
CleanCo have worked hard to create a range of delicious, full flavoured alternatives to your favourite full strength spirits for you to enjoy. They've carefully created spirits using a traditional distillation process, allowing them to produce sophisticated grown-up drinks, with a fraction of the alcohol and calories. By drinking clean, you'll enjoy full flavour without the hangover, or excessive calorie intake. Initially launching with CleanGin in 2019, the range has rapidly expanded to include CleanRum, flavoured CleanGin Editions, and even canned ready to drink cocktails.
Haus
Haus are creating better products designed for the modern drinker. They make aperitifs with natural, responsibly sourced fruits, herbs, and botanicals, and leave out the artificial stuff. Their products are handcrafted, and they make their processes and ingredients transparent, so you know exactly what’s in your glass. They're taking on the liquor industry by rethinking how it works – from product to brand to distribution. Haus bypasses the liquor industry’s 3-tier system and sells direct-to-consumer, building a direct relationship with its customers to create products designed for them. The brand's first products are apéritifs made with whole, natural ingredients and low-ABV, meeting the demands of a generation seeking more sessionable beverages and putting higher standards on what they consume.
Caleño
On a mission to bring joy to not drinking, leading alcohol-free spirit Caleño presents the delicious new addition to its tropical line up, Caleño Dark & Spicy which launched in November. The distilled, golden, and spicy blend, packed with warming pineapple tropical notes, ginger and kola nut spices is the perfect way to add some spice to your night and get the fiesta going. Nearly half of mainstream cocktails contain rum – with the traditional Mojito being the UK’s most searched for cocktail – so this is the perfect non-alcoholic alternative for those who are partial to spiced rum.
Lyre’s
Many years in the making, Lyre’s exquisite range of lovingly crafted alcohol-free, classic spirits was borne from a quest to make the impossible possible. To provide an alternative to those who don’t wish to imbibe alcohol, but still wish to enjoy the mirth, merriment and social intercourse of an evening soiree or shindig. But this is not just any alternative. Every Lyre’s spirit looks, tastes and sashays around the palate just like the original. And yet, the absence of giggle juice enables revellers to remain clear-headed, of good cheer and in fine fettle to pursue whatever tickles their fancy the following day.
Fix8
This kombucha is a sophisticated lightly sparkling soft drink that plays with the flavours and complexity that only fermentation can create. Brewed in small batches at the Fix8 London microbrewery, traditional techniques are used to create its unrivalled flavours; Triple Ginger, Strawberry Tulsi and Citrus Saffron. The entire range is naturally low in sugar and contains a living dose of bacteria for the gut, B vitamins for the nervous system and L-theanine which contributes to a healthy brain function. During its fermentation process, kombucha becomes abundant in organic acids such as acetic, gluconic acid and glucuronic acid. These acids are great for the body’s detoxification process, as they enhance liver function, meaning it can work at its optimal level to remove pollutants from the body.
