The Fashion Brands Making Reusable Face Masks

The wearing of face masks on public transport, whilst shopping, during work, and even whilst working out is the new normal. You yourself might not be high risk, but by wearing one you're helping to not spread it to the old and vulnerable. That is why it’s great to see some of our favourite fashion brands using their manufacturing expertise to a launch their own versions. Hopefully one day very soon there will be no need for them, where they'll merely become collectors’ items, and something to show the grandchildren in many years from now. With this in mind, here is a list of the best reusable and non-medical facemasks available today.

Outlierman

The Outlierman, makers of handcrafted luxury automotive inspired accessories, has reopened for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic with the release of a beautifully designed collection of non-medical face coverings, featuring some of the company’s most popular automotive designs. Using 100 percent silk and handcrafted by highly skilled artisans in Como, Italy, each set of face masks comes in a selection of designs, including the ‘Gentleman Driver’, ‘World Beater’ and ‘Vintage Race’. Designed with comfort in mind, these multi-layer masks are made for covering your face while maintaining the best possible comfort: the external and internal layers are both made of 100 percent silk and include a filter pocket that has been incorporated for a one-time use medical filter. Multifunctional, these non-medical face masks can also be used as a pocket square, before or after being used.

Scotch & Soda

Scotch & Soda, the Amsterdam-based fashion brand, in solidarity with communities worldwide, sends a message of universal love to the world announcing dual campaigns that combat COVID-19 related hunger and the unjust incarceration of LGBTQ minorities. Together alongside The Hunger Project and the LGBTQ Freedom Fund, the brand has two initiatives for the month of June in support of some of the most affected minority groups today. Scotch & Soda’s ‘love wins, today and every day’ Pride month campaign introduces non-medical facemasks that will benefit The Hunger Project, a global, non-profit organization committed to the sustainable end of world hunger. It is predicted that a quarter of a billion people will suffer acute hunger by the end of the year as a result of the current Coronavirus pandemic, according to the annual Global Report on Food Crises. In response, Scotch & Soda will donate 20% of sales for every mask purchased to the international organisation.

Under Armour

Under Armour engineers a first-of-its-kind performance mask to equip athletes returning to training. For months now, millions of athletes worldwide have been wrestling with the challenges of working out under stay-at-home orders, and wondering whether they should wear a face mask if training in public or outside. Debates continue to swirl over how best to stay healthy outside of the home and when to train with a face mask. The UA SPORTSMASK is a reusable, water-resistant performance face mask designed for maximum breathability by Under Armour's innovation team in record time. This mask functions to reduce the spread of respiratory droplets by the wearer. The top of the mask features a mouldable nose-bridge to help secure it in place and mitigate airflow to the eyes, helping to prevent glasses from fogging. It can also be washed and dried, making it more eco-friendly than many single-use, disposable options.

WAWWA

This vegan and sustainable fashion label aims to save the planet in the way it makes clothing. Now they’re looking at helping to stop a global pandemic. The beauty of being a small business with on-site sampling equipment, means WAWWA can turn ideas into physical pieces in a short timeframe. Given that the Organic Cotton Ripstop they have on-hand is pretty breathable, they thought this would make the perfect homemade mask. After sampling and a fit test, they decided to divert all production away from their SS20 collection and towards making face masks. “We want to do our bit to ensure that we are all well-equipped. This is not a marketing stunt. This is not a profit-making scheme. This is a serious matter that needs to be addressed.”

Labrum London

Founded in 2015, Labrum London is a modern-day menswear brand telling the untold stories of West Africa to help bridge the gap between Western and West African culture. The word Labrum is a latin term for ‘having an edge’, and this sits at the heart of the brand’s mission – to make honest, practical clothing rooted in simplicity, fit and a passion for detail. Initially the brand started making masks for people working in frontline services such as delivery drivers and key workers. However, due to popular demand they decided to sell them on their website and will donate profits to the Wickers Charity who are focused at this difficult time on providing care packages for the young people that they support. Many people may not have heard about School Holiday Poverty, but this is what low-income parents are facing right now due to the lockdown rules in place. It is when low-income parents experience financial difficulties during school holidays due to extra childcare costs and the absence of free school meals for their children.

As everyone knows the care sector has been hit hard by COVID-19 and after the recent guidance on masks in the UK, this brand thought it was the perfect opportunity to lend a hand.
