Once upon a time, there seemed to be so many negatives surrounding four-wheel-drive vehicles. From high fuel costs, low performance and poor drivability; it seems the car manufacturers have finally worked out a magic formula. Gone are the days of paying through the nose for petrol and diesel – say hello to the more economic and extremely good driving 4x4s of 2020. We’ve rounded up our best of the bunch and done all the hard research for you, so making a decision when choosing your next big car will be a breeze!

Dacia Duster 

Just because it’s one of the cheapest on the market today, doesn’t mean you have to compromise on performance. It might not be as plush as some of the models below, but it’s reliable, capable and offers unrivalled value for money. Compared to the petrol model, the diesel is much more premium, so consider this when you pick yours. Plus, when you can pick up a used model from only £7,320, why would you not want to go and give the Duster a test drive?

Suzuki Vitara 

Thanks to Suzuki’s vast experience in making small SUVs (back from 1970 to be exact), the Vitara is one of the best on the market. Boasting an incredibly roomy interior; perfect for heading on holiday with the family; an efficient petrol engine and good handling, it’s a sure-fire option if you’re looking for a small 4x4. With used models coming in at around £6,650+, they’re a good choice for everyone.

Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross 

Hardy, reliable and stylish. The Eclipse Cross will take you from city to country driving with ease. With a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine, it’s not your run-of-the-mill small 4x4. The only downside? They’ve assumed everyone will use their phones for navigation so have taken away the factory fitted sat-nav system. So, if this isn’t on your list of must-haves, it’s definitely a car to go and test out.

No matter the 4x4 you choose, if you’re opting for a used model, meaning the manufacturer’s warranty has expired, we would recommend taking out an extended policy with the likes of ALA. Regardless of how well cars are built these days, you can never be too careful or too protected. You don’t want to get caught out with a huge bill if anything should happen!
