TOP 10 SPRING/SUMMER 2019 MEN'S TRAINERS
SOME OF THE VERY BEST FOOTWEAR WE’VE SEEN THIS YEAR SO FAR
Written by Menswear Style in Essentials on the 25th February 2019
As the weather slowly creeps from sub-zero to tolerable and spring rears its head on the not so distant horizon, you may find yourself allowing the pleasures of soft suede, plush nubuck and, dare we say it, permeable mesh to fill your mind. Whilst we feel in no way confident putting our money on a week without rain and don’t suggest donning your box-fresh-best just yet, we do think it pays to be prepared. That’s why we’ve put our minds together to create a list of some of the very best in latest Spring/Summer 2019 footwear arrivals that, in our opinion, will be this year's go-to favourites among beaches, parks and beer gardens alike. From reimagined classics and fresh new silhouettes to swooshes and three stripes, we’re sure there’s something to scratch everyone's post-winter trainer itch and make the inevitable breakup with your trusty cold weather boots, not so hard on the feet.
adidas Broomfield
Admirers of classically terrace styled trainers rejoice, the Broomfield is here. Keeping it casual, the trainers stick to their guns with a low-profile, three stripe appearance complete with all the trimmings. Lush suede, a lightweight rubber sole and t toe overlay design complete with metallic gold branding to the lateral side. Very nice indeed.
adidas SC Premiere
Having been spotted on the feet of celebrities such as David Beckham and Jonah Hill, it seems adidas’ newest model has already made quite the name for itself. Reimagining classic tennis shoes for the streets of today, the SC Premiere boasts a super contemporary, stripped back, multi-panelled design that adds depth and intrigue without sacrificing on laidback appeal. Crafted from premium leather with nubuck overlays atop a rubber midsole that hits bang on the sweet spot of chunky but not too chunky, the trainer is an easy fit into almost any wardrobe. So, whether you stick with trousers, opt for jeans or brave the shorts the SC Premier will be on hand to support your decision, even if slightly questionable in the current climate.
adidas LXCON
Appearing simultaneously vintage and futuristic at the same time, the LXCON is another of adidas’ newer models freshly dreamt up for 2019. Inspired by a pair of heritage runners from the ‘90s, the LXCON offers a lightweight EVA midsole, adiPRENE heel cushioning and a padded knit mesh upper that hugs the foot whilst maximising air flow. Dressed in a muted beige that provides the perfect base layer to accentuate the pops of bold colouring, the trainer features a translucent tube detail that not only adds structure to the shape but brings some science fiction, see-it-to-believe-it charm. The word timeless gets thrown around quite a bit but we think this one hits the nail on the head.
New Balance M991
Perhaps one of the true purveyors of the ‘dad style’ the New Balance M991 is as effortlessly cool as they come. Putting to work a selection of suede panelling, that takes on this season's burnt orange colourway beautifully, the shoe gives way to a plethora of underlaid mesh that gracefully catches the soft summer’s breeze. Combine that with the motion flow midsole, visible Abzorb foam and gold reflective details and, dad or not, you must admit they tick most, if not all the boxes when it comes to your next new trainer purchase.
Nike Tailwind
If you’re looking for a timeless vintage runner then look no further than this latest iteration of the Nike Tailwind. Staying nigh on identical to the 1978 original introduced for the Honolulu Marathon, the trainer strikes the perfect balance between performance enhancing qualities and modern minimal styling. Featuring a multi textile upper that’s both comfortable and breathable, the trainer comes dressed in hues of white giving it as much summertime appeal as a mid-evening dip in the pool. Sat atop a lightweight air unit and waffle traction outsole, the Tailwind boasts serious built-in support and grip, ideal for any and all of your urban escapades.
Comme x Spalwart Pitch
No stranger to a good old-fashioned collaboration, Comme des Garçons join forces with artisanal footwear company Spalwart for a lesson in combining the worlds of athleticism and luxury fashion. Taking the form of the tried and tested pitch sneaker, the pair opt to keep details to a minimum using a mixture of mesh and suede uppers as well as a subtly co-branded tongue and supportive leather footbed to create a modest silhouette that’s bursting at the seams with quality craftsmanship.
Nike VaporMax Plus
Pairing a timeless silhouette with revolutionary footwear technology, the VaporMax Plus is a true testament to the design team at Nike, showcasing their ability to take the familiar and transform it into something that feels completely different. Displaying iconic Tuned 1 multi-textile uppers including a caged off lacing design, embroidered swoosh and heel pull tab, the sneaker is finished with a translucent VaporMax air unit below for satisfaction guaranteed with every step.
Y-3 Raito Racer
When putting together a list of some of the best in Spring/Summer footwear it’s hard to ignore the newest addition to the Y-3 lineup. Known for their often avant-garde approach to footwear, the dynamic duo consisting of head designer Yohji Yamamoto and sportswear giant adidas have once again knocked it out of the instant classic park. Arguably made with summer in mind, the Raito Racer unapologetically shows off an impressive CV consisting of lightweight mesh primeknit sock uppers, boost technology midsole and some intricate topstitch detailing. For those not in the know, we’re talking exceptional breathability, unparalleled lightweight comfort and some very impressive looks.
DSquared2 Sneakers
Embedded with luxury, DSquared2 bring their usual opulent styling to a classic trainer profile. With premium nubuck, calf and rubberised leather uppers, the sneakers utilise multi-coloured overlays, perforated detailing and branding to the tongue and lace dubrae for an abundance of visual appeal. An undeniable and well-deserved treat for the feet after a long cold winter.
adidas Samba RM
First introduced in the ‘50s as an indoor training shoe, the Samba is as battle-hardened as they come, earning its stripes throughout over 60 years in the footwear game. Keeping things largely untouched on the top, apart from some subtle, modern streamlining to the shape, this iteration of the Samba features boost technology all wrapped up in a vintage-inspired gum midsole.
