THE BEST URBAN LONDON PICNIC SPOT WITH ROBINSONS REFRESH’D
A ROOF GARDEN BUILT ABOVE AN UNDERGROUND RAILWAY STATION
Written by Peter Brooker in Food & Drink on the 27th July 2018
Coming from the remotest of villages deep in the wells of Cambridgeshire, I certainly miss the greenery and solace now I'm living in Bethnal Green, London. However, London is not a place divorced from sanctuary. If you're looking for a quiet spot to throw down a picnic blanket and scoff on some lemon slices, you'll find no better place than Jubilee Park in Canary Wharf.
Before I start rhapsodising about the merits of Jubilee Park, first let me tell you about the armament required for a winning picnic. Robinsons Refresh’d is the perfect suiter for a summer picnic. You may already be well acquainted with Refresh’d as they can be purchased as part of many high street meal deals. At just 55 kcal per 500ml bottle they're a perfect accompaniment to an urban picnic. They contain 100% naturally sourced ingredients, no added sugar, artificial sweeteners, colours, flavourings or preservatives. The range is made with 100% naturally sourced ingredients and contains naturally sourced stevia leaf extract so you can enjoy your picnic without thinking about needing to hit the gym after.
Jubilee Park is effectively a roof garden built above an underground railway station. The central feature is a raised serpentine water channel with rough stone walls. It's had some excoriating reviews since it's plant completion back in 2004, mainly down to the design of lively grass mounding and blend of grass and astro turf. However, it's a nice place of refuge in the middle of what is considered the mini Singapore of London. Concrete jungles don't get more magnanimous than Canary Wharf.
There are plenty of nice eateries situated around Jubilee Park, but how many more opportunities will you get to enjoy a picnic in the park? The girlfriend has gotten me on a very healthy regime of late, hence the avocados, nuts and berries. Gone are the Jaffa cakes and cocktail sausages (although I insisted on getting some Kipling cakes for the sake of the photo). I'm also 11 months sober now and so gone are the cans of lager and miniature bottles of Prosecco. Instead, we're now enjoying bottles of Robinsons Refresh'd; a refreshing mix of spring water and real fruit.
After the picnic is done you can enjoy seeing further attractions around Canary Wharf such as Billingsgate Fish Market, the largest indoor Fish Market and home to the only seal found in Thames; Sammy the Seal.
A game of crazy golf, outdoor table tennis, Cabot Square fountain that is triggered by motion sensors and also peppered around are some Henry Moore statues. To maximise the most out of your day you could enjoy a guided walk that lasts for 2 hours and ends at Jubilee Park. The tour costs £10 a head and gives you a great insight into the human elements of one of the capitals busiest financial districts.
