JOHN LEWIS PURPLE REIGN TREND REPORT
HUES THAT WON’T FEEL OUT OF PLACE IN AN OTHERWISE MINIMALIST WARDROBE
Written by Peter Brooker in Trends on the 20th October 2017
John Lewis has released its Purple Reign Trend Report this week. We all need more purple in our lives and according to some surveys Purple exudes wealth and is the colour most often associated with royalty, magic, mystery and piety. The collection calls upon rich hues that won’t feel out of place in an otherwise minimalist wardrobe. Ditch warm-weather lilacs and violets in favour of deeper plum and aubergine tones. Not only do they complement an autumnal palette, they’ll also fit seamlessly with your everyday staples - black, camel, grey and navy. At MenswearStyle we were invited to investigate the Purple Reign Trend Report by John Lewis, and make sure it’s up to snuff. Here's our favourite threads:
1. Kin by John Lewis Shawl Velvet Jacket
There's a sure fire way to stand out on the red carpet these days and that's to rock a purple tux. This shawl lapel velvet jacket from Kin by John Lewis is striking. Cut to a slim fit from lightweight materials, this luminaire of a jacket features a tidy, one button front, two slanted welt pockets and a double vent at the back to allow for added flexibility. Argentine footballer Messi really thrust the purple tux into the zeitgeist with his various incarnations, one being the infamous Ralph Lauren he donned at the FIFA Ballon d'Or Awards in 2015. This is a touch more down played, and perhaps the notch velvet dusty rose equivalent would be a closer comparison, but this is more refined and still capable of getting those tongues wagging.
2. Carhartt WIP Playoff Knit Jumper
The Playoff Knit Jumper from Carhartt WIP will make an intriguing arrow to your winter quiver. It's intricately crafted from a soft-to-touch lambswool blend to create the traditional crew neckline and long sleeve jumper adorned with a natural knit texture. When buying sweaters in this price range I look for a couple of things; durability and versatility. This will be interchangeable with many outfits, a white shirt underneath a darker or lighter overcoat etc. Also with it being Carhatt, a brand over 120 years old, it will last a long time as the brand was originally founded with the aim of producing durable and comfortable workwear of exceptional quality.
3. Paul Smith Hamilton Lace Up Leather Boots
These boots almost climbed out of the screen on my laptop. Of course, it's the Hamilton boot by Paul Smith that everyone has been raving about this season. Supple leather uppers, cut to a traditional ankle boot design set atop a low block heel. The contrast pull tab is a nice touch and this calibre of footwear will ameliorate yourself from your circle of fellow fashionistas this winter season.
4. Samsoe & Samsoe Madmax Fleece Jacket
The wild card it seems. You might be unsure why this Madmax jacket from Samsoe & Samsoe made the purple reign trend report, but this anomaly was a thankful addition and is a shade that teams perfectly with the plum colourway. Surprising size proportions and typically minimalist Scandinavian design will allow you to flaunt a key trend piece underneath too.
5. Hilfiger Denim Crew Neck Jersey Top
Lastly, back on track with the purple theme, something a little showier. This crew neck jersey top from Tommy Hilfiger might be a bit 'logo-tastic' for some, but it's a far better alternative than some of its collegiate contemporaries. Plus, it can't all be business casual, your wardrobe demands a little playtime, especially at the weekends.
That's it from us. What did you think of the John Lewis Trend Report? Do you agree with these top picks? Have your say in the comments box below.
