5 Winter Menswear Trends to Know

Winter may be the worst time of year for weather, but it’s widely considered one of the best times of year for fashion. With declining conditions comes the ability to layer once again, and the chance to break out those chunky knits and statements coats that were neglected in the summer time. But it’s also an excellent excuse to revamp your wardrobe, after all, it is common when summer comes to an end to find yourself unprepared for the changing of the seasons, so we’ve put together a list of 5 trends from the AW17 runway shows we expect to see rise to prevalence this winter.

Oversized Knitwear

In fairness, oversized knitwear is always in style, but this season in particular has seen a plethora of amazing options come onto the market. The most popular seem to be from legendary Belgian designer Raf Simons, who’s cult-like following in the world of fashion precedes him. In his AW17 collection, Raf presented a wide range of interestingly cut heavy knits, all with their own uniquely fascinating details such as massive flared sleeves, cropped silhouettes, and oversized pockets. Due to the overwhelmingly positive response to these pieces, you can expect other brands to follow suit, so look out for more statement jumpers hitting all your favourite stores very soon.

Oversized Shirts

Admittedly, this inclusion of oversized shirts into the list has been tactically placed, as they go hand in hand with our previous entry and men's faux suede shirts will keep you warm. Layering is all about silhouette, and in most cases, you wouldn’t want one layer being drastically different in length from another, but recently, thanks to the likes of Balenciaga and Raf Simons, we have seen this rule broken. Putting a longer length button down shirt underneath a cropped and oversized sweatshirt, letting the shirt tails hang out from the bottom, is a look we have seen numerous times now on the runway and one that we are likely to see become increasingly popular in the coming months. For the best results, make sure that the two pieces have a contrasting pattern or print to really play up the unique proportions that the look provides.

Wide Leg Trousers

The return to wider trousers has been on the horizon for some time now, but 2017 seems to be the year to fully embrace the change. Balenciaga came out with the most sought-after garment of the summer when they dropped their Prince of Wales checked flares, and Issey Miyake’s Homme Plisse pleated trouser selection has never been more popular, so now is without a doubt the right time to get on board with this trend.

Bumbags

Adding functionality to your outfits this season is the historically unfashionable bumbag. However, you shouldn’t be put off by your preconceptions of the often-despised accessory. With legendary brands such as Prada, Gucci, and Louis Vuitton providing a mass of fantastic options, the bumbag has never been cooler. The key is, rather than wearing it in a traditional manner, you wear it across your body so that it breaks up your outfit and acts as the focal point of your top half. Although this’ll do nothing to keep you warm, it does look stylish, and will provide you with a convenient way to carry all your essentials day to day.

Shallow Beanies

This is by no means a new trend, but it also isn’t showing any signs of fading anytime soon. The shallow beanie has made appearances in several street style galleries and on the heads of countless influencers over the past couple of years, and is without a doubt one of the most stylish ways to keep your head warm this winter. Although the favoured colour of choice is a neutral black or grey, this season, maybe consider making your beanie a statement piece and going for a daring burnt orange or pink to really elevate your outfit to the next level.
