WE ASK GIRLS ABOUT THEIR TOP GROOMING TURN-OFFS
AND WE TEACH YOU HOW TO FIX THEM ASAP
Written by Paddy Maddison in Grooming on the 17th July 2017
It doesn’t matter how great your wardrobe is, how nice a car you drive, how good-looking or intelligent you are – if you have terrible grooming habits you’re going to repel your preferred sex. Let’s face it, nobody wants to turn up to a first date and be greeted by somebody who looks like they just got back from 6 months trekking the Amazon. That much is pretty obvious, but what about the little things? Those often-overlooked aspects of grooming that you may not notice, but women definitely do? To find out, we asked some female friends about their biggest male grooming turn offs and we’re going to tell you how to fix them.
Floss is boss
“There’s nothing worse than a guy who neglects his teeth. You might not think it’s obvious that you don’t floss, but it’s one of the first things I notice about a guy. Nobody wants to look at that.” – Charlotte, 25
The fix: Well, it should be pretty obvious – remember to floss 3-4 times a week. In addition to that you should invest in a good mouth wash, an electric toothbrush and a whitening toothpaste for best results.
Facial hair = good. Neck hair = bad
“I really like a bit of facial hair (not too much though), but I can’t stand it when guys don’t keep their neck hair in check.” – Kate, 27
The fix: If you’re going to rock some facial hair then good for you, but keep the neck hair under control by carving a neckline. It should start just above your Adam’s apple and follow the curve of your jaw up and round on each side. Just be careful not to take it too high. If you don’t like the sound of that, another option is to use a beard trimmer on a short setting and trim the neck hair, fading it into your beard.
Two sprays will do
“It’s really off-putting to me when men douse themselves in cologne. Personally, if I can smell you from across the table, you’ve gone too far – it just makes you look like you’re trying too hard.” - Hannah, 30
The fix: Never use more than two squirts of cologne and be smart with how you apply it. Always spray directly onto the skin rather than clothes and stick to areas such as your chest, neck, wrists and the inside of your elbows. Your fragrance will last longer in these spots while remaining subtle.
The back hair has to go
“I think I speak for most girls when I say we like our men a bit rugged, but I draw the line at a hairy back. Seriously, how can anyone think that’s acceptable? If we have to go for the occasional wax then you should do the same!” – Jess, 26
The fix: Ok, we get it, it’s extremely difficult to shave your back. However, that’s no excuse and this is one of the instances in which you should really be booking an appointment at your local salon for a wax. It aint nice, but if your cursed with King Kong’s back and don’t want to repulse people then it’s definitely worth it.
There’s no excuse for talons
“If a guy has long or dirty nails, that’s an instant no from me. If he can’t even keep his nails trimmed and clean, then god knows what’s in his pants.” – Amy, 32
The fix: You can use soap and a nail brush to clean your nails as often as needed, then trim them with a set of nail clippers once a week. You can then get rid of any rough edges with a nail file, making sure to get a smooth finish. If you want to go the extra mile then coconut oil can be rubbed into the nails to keep them looking bright and healthy.
