We were surrounded by true countryside at this award-winning hotel and spa in the market town of Helmsley. You’re safely away from the stress of the city and not even your smartphone can distract you since there isn’t much network coverage here. The hotel is hidden away so you can relax, unwind, and indulge. It’s cosy yet contemporary with open fires and snugs, whilst outdoors the hotel boasts a unique Mediterranean terrace and outdoor pool. It was whilst looking out onto this very pool and across the inner courtyard buildings that we realised the Feversham Arms feels like a little village within itself.

Originally an old coaching inn, the hotel was rebuilt and renamed in 1855 by the Earl of Feversham on the site of an older hostelry. However, it wasn’t until 1967 when the hotel began its transformation into what it is today. From this period onwards the hotel has been restored and renovated by a number of private owners before being bought by the current owners in 2008.

The Room 

Being shown to your room is certainly a required service in this hotel. There are so many winding corridors through joining buildings that it would be difficult to navigate your way without help. But this is a loveable character and charm that we admire about the Feversham Arms. Guests can choose from 33 individually designed bedrooms and suites. Each has its own unique décor, style and character and features Egyptian cotton sheets, soft exquisite duck down duvets and cotton blankets. There’s smart TVs with internet access and bathrooms are furnished with luxurious Temple Spa toiletries. Our suite was extremely homely and featured stunning views over the pool courtyard from both the living and bedroom areas. The huge bathroom equipped with his and hers sinks is impressive.

The Weathervane Restaurant 

After being welcomed at the bar and treating ourselves to a cocktail pit stop in front of a log burning fire, we then made our way into The Weathervane Restaurant. The food was true fine dining, with big flavours and interesting presentation. It’s great to see that locally sourced produce and food foraged from the North York Moors are at the centre of many of their dishes too. Guests can opt to indulge in a perfectly balanced 6-course tasting menu or enjoy dishes from the À la Carte dining selection, before finishing with a taster from the most talked about cheese trolley in Yorkshire.

The Verbena Spa 

The hotel's spa treatments at Verbena Spa are provided by Temple Spa, a uniquely British brand inspired by Mediterranean healthy diet and lifestyle. After a long day of exploring the local area we certainly made use of the extensive 'Heat Experience' including an aromatherapy room, salt inhalation chamber, saunarium, monsoon shower and foot spas. After this we relaxed in the outdoor heated swimming pool and Jacuzzi to work up an appetite for dinner.
