Planning a short trip to the country side this winter? Whether its a log cabin in the Yorkshire Dales or you're set to explore the Peak District, you’ll need to be prepared. Packing for most of us is the biggest challenge of a trip no matter the length of time. In winter we’re hit with a few more hurdles - from which shirts to take to which trousers are the most versatile and comfortable. After all, we all want to travel light, remain warm and look dapper.

Basics 

I’m an over packer but also someone who likes to travel, often on and off trains and planes. I have soon learned that I needed to pack lighter. So, start with the basics; your underwear, warm socks, plain t-shirts and those few things you know you cannot leave home without. Stores like H&M and Uniqlo are great for those last minute basics.

Outerwear 

You’re 100% going to need a coat. Bring something warm as well as something waterproof if you know you’ll be spending a lot of time outside. Barbour are great for layering over shirts and knitwear, whilst also being water resistant. Remember to also pack a lightweight rain coat which can easily be rolled in your daily travel bag. Alternatively, Musto produce active outwear so if you’re clay pigeon shooting for example you’ll be guaranteed to stay dry and well insulated throughout.

Footwear 

You'll need something sturdy, durable, comfortable and stylish. I would recommend leather boots. They’ll keep your feet dry and are easy to clean should they get a little dirty. Check out Mr-Shoes for brands such as Dr Martens, Timberland and Red Wing who offer winter boot styles that will see you through more than just one winter.

Layers 

Think about understated versatile items; don’t waste space. I know it’s the safer and more boring option, however stick with the pieces in your wardrobe that you make the most use of because you'll wear them the most. Pack denim and flannel shirts, luxury knits and sweaters with jeans or chinos. If you want to dress smarter for an evening dinner or Sunday lunch, you could pack a white Oxford shirt with slim fit jeans and an unstructured blazer.

Accessories  

Extras that you can rely on for keeping you warm include; a pair of leather gloves, a flat cap and a wool scarf. Again, keep these in neutral shades of navy, grey and browns so you can mix and match with most items in your weekend bag. Personally i'd suggest Mr Porter who has the best of all winter accessories.

The Bag 

As this is only a weekend trip you might be able to pack everything into a holdall or weekender. Leather is your best choice if you want something sturdy and smart with a luxury feel. Shop the likes of Ralph Lauren or Mulberry. As well as a holdall, an extra rucksack will be useful while you’re away to carry your rain coat, camera and other personal belongings.
