Matalan have put together a one of a kind Guys Guide to Prom, and we’ve given our advice on how to dress and impress on the big day.

First things first, there’s a difference between a tuxedo and prom suit, this may not be something that you’ve put much thought into until now but if your invite specifies ‘black tie’ then you’ll need to invest in a tuxedo. Strictly speaking, a tuxedo comprises of a black suit, bow tie and white shirt; a tuxedo will almost always feature satin or silk on the lapels and a long strip down each trouser leg.

If your invitation leaves the dress code open, then go ahead and express yourself with a slim fitting suit in an original colour such as burgundy or green - of course, you can always stick to a stylish black or navy suit if you feel more comfortable. It’s worth mentioning at this point that if you’re planning on attending prom with a date, a little effort goes a long way. Try and establish her colour scheme before the day and use this somewhere in your outfit, matching entirely can look too much so something as simple as picking out the colour with matching socks is a stylish way to coordinate.

As far as accessories go, less is more – stick to a bow tie, you won’t wear one often so make the most of it! If you’re wearing a tuxedo, then you’ll most likely be teaming this with a double cuff shirt and the option to wear cufflinks is open. If you’re opting for a prom suit then stay simple and wear a classy watch, lapel pin or pocket square – you’ll ooze confidence and class with these simple added extras.

The main thing to remember is that whether you like it or not, you will reminisce over your prom night for a long time to come so relax, be yourself and keep things simple. You’re young and will most likely spend a lot of your adult life in ordinary suits so add a pop of individuality wherever you can, you won’t regret it.
