THE IMPORTANCE OF HAIR CONDITIONER
THE RIGHT PRODUCTS TO IMPROVE THE QUALITY AND HEALTH OF YOUR HAIR
Written by Rakelle Maurici in Hair on the 14th April 2016
Using the right hair products can make a significant difference to the quality, health and manageability of your hair. However, how many of you have put thought and care into the conditioner you’re using? While some men use their partners, some simply buy the cheapest stuff in the supermarket whilst many other chaps don’t use it at all. Hair conditioner works to smoothen, soften, nourish, hydrate and repair damaged hair from the daily elements and stresses of life such as heat and harsh winds.
When choosing both shampoo and conditioners there is a general rule of thumb which understands that shampoo is to be chosen according to your scalp condition, whereas conditioner is to treat and enhance the hair itself. We’re going to guide you on what products you should be using according to your hair type - suggesting the best ones on the market so you know that you’re in safe hands.
It’s worth taking note that there is a significant difference between salon brands in relation to supermarket products. Salon brands are tested for exactly what the consumer needs and wants, and supermarket brands are generally manufactured by all-purpose companies which produce a number of household products in vast quantities. If you want to be extra sure and a second opinion, ask your barber which products will work best specifically for your hair type - you can even ask them to try them out on your hair each time you visit to see how they perform.
Curly, Coarse or Dry Hair
If your hair lacks life and is generally quite dry, curly or coarse look for moisturising conditioners because they contain products to help retain the hair moisture. Conditioners that contain fatty acids are perfect for those dry ends, as well as deep conditioners which you can use 1-4 times per month. Products to avoid are volumising hair conditioners.
For Limp, Fine or Damaged Hair
If you have fine hair, you will want a thickening or volumising conditioner. These types of hair conditioners coat the hair in a layer of protein which makes the hair appear thicker and stronger, while filling particles of missing hair cuticle (crucial for good quality hair). The best technique for this kind of hair is to avoid placing conditioner at the scalp, this will result in limper hair (not good) and avoid hydrating products also. Another tip, a ‘reverse’ hair wash works great on damaged hair. This means to condition the hair before shampooing - this allows the hair to repair before washing and will make it softer, smoother and more manageable.
Best Leave in Conditioners
Just like the moisturising products you might use on your body and face, 'leave in' conditioners make styling much easier as well as protecting your hair from the sun. Research shows that many men agree that they can style their hair much better the day after washing it with a leave-in conditioner - give it a try.
Guys, do you use conditioner after shampoo? #hair
