ARTIST RESIDENCE LONDON HOTEL REVIEW
A 10 BEDROOM BOUTIQUE HOTEL WITHIN AN 1852 TOWNHOUSE IN PIMLICO
Written by Menswear Style in Travel on the 5th April 2016
Tucked away on a signature London residential Townhouse Street nearby Winston Churchill’s old abode in Pimlico, you’ll find this hidden gem boutique hotel which has just 10 bedrooms and was once a pub called The Clarendon. Artist Residence London was originally built in 1852 by Thomas Cubitt and is located in the Pimlico Grid which is now a conservation area. The hotel prides itself on its interior design and displayed art which is evident from the moment you step foot inside – eclectic luxury with a homely, intimate ambience. This property opened less than 2 years ago and is the third hotel offered by hoteliers Justin and Charlotte Salisbury.
The Room
The bedrooms are spread across 5 floors so you’ll need to be in shape if you’d like a room with the best view. There are 2 suites and 8 bedrooms and you’ll get the sense that you’re in your home away from home. The furniture and homewares sourced from antiques shops will make you wish you’d designed your own home in the same way. Industrial lamps, reclaimed wood desks, exposed brick and vintage leather chairs teamed with quirky modern technology such as the Smeg fridge and Nespresso machine works more than perfectly. The artwork which graces every wall space on every floor is also striking, exciting and modern – with a superb sense of humour. The bathroom in our chamber (The Loft) gave the image of a luxury ski chalet but with an industrial and extravagance twist – especially the freestanding bath, Victorian console sinks and Bramley beauty products.
The Cambridge Street Kitchen
The restaurant is the first thing you see when you approach the hotel from the outside. You’d actually be forgiven for thinking that there was no hotel here at all. Again, beautiful interior design sets this restaurant off perfectly. Quirky lighting, industrial chairs and tables and outstanding artwork. The Cambridge Street Kitchen is a favourite hangout among the locals and we’re sure they’d like to keep it that way. Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner – dishes include BBQ glazed pork cheeks and soft shell crab from an open kitchen.
Clarendon Cocktail Cellar
Whist looking for the lavatories in the basement we found yet another hidden gem, a ping pong room, club room and speakeasy style bar. Hotel guest can step inside the old pub cellar and find a hidden world of top notch drinks with a splendid atmosphere. Every evening renowned Bar Manager Stephen Ruse and his team are shaking, stirring and throwing their very own libations in the Clarendon Cocktail Cellar to accompany you on a merry night of chatter and amusement.
