OUR SIHH 2016 EXPERIENCE WITH IWC
FROM SCHAFFHAUSEN TO THE SALON INTERNATIONAL DE LA HAUTE HORLOGERIE, A STAR-STUDDED EVENT CELEBRATING THE WORLD OF WATCHES
Written by Neil Geddes in Events on the 25th January 2016
The lights have come down on a glittering week of haute horolgerie in Geneva where IWC have been celebrating their infamous Pilots watch series. MenswearStyle was there to absorb the technical innovations and craftsmanship. IWC launched its first pilots watch in 1936, followed by the Big Pilot in 1940. This was the beginnings of a dedication and association with aeronautical and in 1948 the celebrated Schaffhausen manufacturer supplied the RAF with the Mark 11. Their creative technology, clean lines and innovation was the benchmark for pilot watches lasting over 40 years.
In 2016 IWC are increasing their range slightly and sympathetically with four new models, which inspired their focus for SIHH 2016. First things first, IWC took MenswearStyle back in time to the 1930s with an experience of flying in a 1939 Junker Ju-52 based out of Dübendorf, near Zürich. The flight took us over the glorious snow covered Swiss Alps to experience flying in its most authentic and ‘stripped down’ environment. Stepping inside the cockpit of the plane, we appreciated the focus the pilots had as they navigated through the mountainous ranges, using the wrist watch as an instrument of measurement. A wonderful feeling.
Upon landing we headed off to the HQ Schaffhausen where IWC have been creating their masterpieces since the late 1860s. Here we were able to experience the craftsmanship first hand by taking part in an introductory course of assembling and dissemble of a watch movement. The patience required to carefully screw tiny screws and place the ‘bridges’ and wheel cogs into place was evident and yet extremely rewarding.
The next day was the SIHH 2016 event in Geneva. A fabulous designed exhibition of some the the most prestigious watch brands showcasing their latest innovations. Walking through the halls you could feel the excitement amongst the guests and exhibitors. We headed to the IWC display, which was a feast of Big Pilot enthusiasm and celebrity endorsement.
It was soon time to prepare for the star studded IWC “Come Fly with us” evening gala, celebrating the Pilot series and innovations the brand is achieving and admired by collectors. Famous faces and IWC ambassadors from film, sports, and fashion sectors graced the red carpet to celebrate a truly glamourous event. IWC – the watch world is highly appreciative of your creativity and dedication to excellence.
