5 RULES FOR WEARING BRIGHT & COLOURFUL SUITS
ADVISE TO LIVE BY INCLUDING TIPS ON FITTING, FABRIC, COLOURS, GROOMING AND CONFIDENCE

Last season the velvet jacket was the key piece, but summer calls for a bit more experimentation at formal events and weddings, so what better time to introduce the bright suit - you can also use John Lewis discounts to save more. A wardrobe staple for style luminaries, such as Tinie Tempah and Oliver Proudlock, this piece isn't for the timid, but instead is a fun alternative to the classic navy two button suit, that can be more flattering than you think. Before you jump in, there are a few non-negotiable rules that must be followed to make the most of this statement piece.
1. Fit is everything
This type of suit demands attention and the best way to carry off a strong hue is with sharp tailoring. Pay close attention to the fit around the shoulders, waist, collars and cuffs - and if your budget allows, go bespoke. An ill-fitting jacket or baggy trousers is instant death to this look. If you're braving this for the first time opt for single-breasted styles since they're easier to style.
2. Stick to great fabric in rich tones
The deeper and truer the hue, the better these suits tend to look. Avoid irresdescence (unless you want to reference the late nineties) and stick to a sleek silhouette with minimal pockets and no extra details. The colour should remain the most interesting part of this suit, so simplicity and clean lines are paramount to carrying it off.
3. Don't forget your grooming
Fresh skin, neat nails, tidy facial hair and a sharp haircut are pre-requisites for nailing this look. A colourful suit calls for minimal accessories, placing your grooming habits under scrutiny. If in doubt or if you're attending a special occasion, invest in professional treatments to keep you looking your best.
4. Choose your event wisely
Not everyone will appreciate a statement look, especially when you're not meant to be the star of the show or are amongst a very corporate crowd. Avoid the reputational minefield by gently gauging how open your peers/host will be to a slightly different take on the traditional suit. As a general rule, creative crowds tend to be the most forgiving here.
5. Apply confidence and lots of it
There's nowhere to hide in this type of suit, so allow your charm and personality to shine through as the perfect complement to your look. People will instantly be curious about you, so this is a great opportunity to give them an insight to you more creative and flamboyant fun side.
