The summer short is an easy to wear summer essential, which can be both flattering and appropriate for a multitude of occasions, with the use of clever styling. Although shorts are the perfect option when the temperatures rise, never neglect the importance of length and fit. Choose a pair (or pairs) which end either 2 inches above the kneecap (at the shortest) or just below the kneecap (at the longest) for the most flattering look. Flat front and slim fit styles suit most men, so avoid too much bagginess (especially pockets) around the hips and finish off with a classic belt in black or tan or a bold colour. The Tailored Short 

This short from Cos x Mr Porter, is the closest you will get to a 'formal' short. The reverse pleats and sharp pockets give these shorts a more dressed-up look, which when paired with a matching blazer, could potentially venture into the office (albeit, a forgiving office). The burgundy colour is an unexpected twist, but retains its versatility and can equally be paired with a fine knit jumper or crisp shirt.

The Sweat Short

Sweatpants have transcended their place as gym apparel and these shorts from Reiss are a particularly cool option for those who want to try the high/low look. The rear pocket detail and neat pockets give these shorts a more tailored appearance. Use this to your advantage by pairing with a casual loafer or slip-on.

The Cargo Short 

A slightly trickier option comes in the form of these Ralph Lauren cargo shorts, but casual activities positively scream for this laidback, all-American style. The trick is to be careful where the pocket sits on the thigh and choose a pair which end halfway down the kneecap. The overall look should still be streamlined and remember that those extra pockets are for decoration only, not for use.

The Distressed Short 

Denim shorts tend to be a bit of a minefield, but this fun pair from River Island ticks all the boxes, with the contrast stitching and subtle distressed areas on the legs. The acid wash is a bit of a nineties throwback, and it definitely limits its use to daytime activities, but don't dismiss them until you try them.

The No-Brainer Short 

If you don't want to spend too long or too much cash on a pair of shorts, this navy pair from J Crew is versatile enough to take you from semi-formal to poolside. The classic shape and flattering length means that they can be paired with pretty much anything, and will still look appropriate. Definitely a firm staple.
