Mandarin Oriental Washington D.C. Hotel Review

Arrive at Mandarin Oriental, Washington D.C., overlooking the Southwest Waterfront, and you know you have arrived somewhere special. The grand facade and unique porte cochere beckon. Walk through its doors and take in a sea of marble, limestone and glass. The lobby is inspired by the work of John Russell Pope, designer of the Jefferson Memorial, and boasts the familiar domed ceiling and column placement of the neighboring memorial.

The fact that our taxi driver mistakenly dropped us off at the hotel's conference entrance, showed us just how big this Mandarin Oriental hotel is. We wondered the lower ground floor before being pointed in the direction of the elevator for the ground floor reception. The lobby space is very relaxing and open plan, giving you the opportunity to catch up with work in a quiet stylish space. Design takes inspiration from the orient, with unique Asian features mixed in with grand woods and classic leathers.

The Room

Guestrooms and suites at Mandarin Oriental, Washington D.C. delight visitors with décor marrying Asian elegance with stylish traditional touches, set against the hotel’s signature water and district views. Several layouts are made possible by the unique shape of the building, with guestrooms measuring between 400 to 700 square feet. The design is in keeping with the elements of Feng Shui. For example, the location of the mirror does not face the entry door thereby ensuring good luck is not reflected out of the room and circular forms draw good luck into the guestrooms.

Our room was a good space and features a work desk, which is what we'd expect for this business friendly 5 star hotel. The bathroom features a TV near the sink which means you won't miss your favourite show whilst shaving and the beauty products are self-branded. A particular highlight was the views sweeping across some of Washington DC's grand buildings. Be sure to pay for the club house access when you stay. This space is on the top floor and you'll be treated to complimentary cocktails, beers, snacks, coffee etc. You'll also get an extensive free breakfast here in the morning too.

Muze Restaurant

Muze is the hotel’s all-day dining restaurant. Using the finest local produce combined with the distinctive flavors of South-East Asia, Chef Mark McDonnell offers a tantalizing menu of international dishes with a delicious Asian feel. Offering the ease of all-day dining, combined with a relaxed atmosphere and waterside views, Muze’s menu showcases cuisine that reflects its ‘East meets West Kitchen’ concept, complemented by universal dishes that everyone will recognize and enjoy. The restaurant theme is oriental with artistic yet mouth-watering dishes. Dinner options can be enjoyed as a set menu or shared by picking a selection of starters and mains to try. This was our culinary way of the evening and we enjoyed the experience which included very good waiter service throughout.
