10 Steps to Dressing (Well) on a Budget

Even though we all wish we could wear designer clothes on a daily basis, the truth is that few of us can afford to do so. However, style has nothing to do with how much money is spent on a single garment, but more-so with the strategy behind choosing, fitting and combining your clothes.

Have a read below to learn how to plan your garderobe in order to make the most out of limited resources.

1. Know your brands

You should have a list of brands on which you can rely on in terms of both quality and design. While shop hopping may lead to discovering new brands, it can also make you spend money impulsively on clothes which won't live up to the standards.

2. Stock up on wardrobe essentials

Always buy high quality essential staples that fit your shape perfectly. Every man should invest in plain trousers, a white dress shirt, close-fit shirts, simple jeans, v-necks, cotton t-shirts, and several blazers and cardigans which can help you wrap up quickly when the weather gets cold.

3. Go for neutral colours

Remember that neutral colours will always make you look sharp and classy, and dark clothes will always seem more sophisticated and expensive than bright or light coloured ones.

4. Take advantage of sales

Shopping early during the sale season can be a really good opportunity to get amazing items for half price. However, take care not to get to whirled up in the discount frenzy and end up paying for clothes that are either of poor quality or do not match the rest of your wardrobe.

5. Avoid cheap high street retailers

Even though it can be tempting to buy clothes for close to nothing, the truth is your outfit will most probably look cheap because the materials these retailers use are usually synthetic and get worn-out very easily. Instead of buying cheap clothes regularly, invest in some quality garments that will last you multiple seasons.

6. Go vintage

Check out vintage boutiques and charity shops regularly, as you can find many hidden gems, such as designer pieces, usually at affordable prices.

7. Mix high and lows

Rather than buying entire outfits from shops like Zara and H&M, buy your basics from higher quality shops since these will be the items you’ll wear the most. Once you cover your core garderobe, you're allowed to spice it up with a few cheaper pieces.

8. Don’t spend on trends

Because trends come and go, it’s wiser to keep away from them. Being stylish doesn't necessarily mean having the latest design, so don't spend all your money on trends that can go out of fashion in a season.

9. Invest in shoes, bags and coats

These garments are what usually people see first, so paying more for a good coat, a quality bag and sophisticated shoes will elevate your outfit and help you avoid a scruffy look.

10. Use smart accessories

Keep your main wardrobe as basic as possible, but make your outfit stand out with interesting jewellery, slim ties, hats, bowties, cufflinks and scarves.

11. Attitude is key

We thought we’d throw in a bonus step... the most important element for a stylish outfit is the way you carry yourself. You should walk and stand with confidence no matter if you’re dressed from the latest Martin Margiela collection or if you're wearing a Mango coat from last season.
